Reported By:  Rob Page

Date Submitted: 10/5/05

Assessment Period:  AY 05-06

Related College Goal:  To provide a gateway to success for students by providing: Strong core curriculum and transfer programs.

Unit/Team Goal:  To provide quality instruction in the courses the division offers; to provide class schedules and staffing to support the needs of the student population of Georgia Highlands College; to provide support for faculty in the division for their teaching and professional development; and to operate efficiently within the constraints of the division budget.

Expected Outcome:  The SCS Division will provide adequate part-time faculty to meet staffing needs at acceptable levels.

Outcome Assessment Method:  The Division Chair will monitor and record the number of classes taught by part-time faculty.

Performance Targets:

Primary Target:  Limit to less than 5% the number of SCS part-time faculty that teach more than 2 courses in a semester.

Secondary Target:

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results):

In Fall 2005, 8 of 57 part-time faculty taught 3 classes – 14%

In Spring 2006, 8 of 70 part-time faculty taught 3 classes – 11.4%

Average for AY 2005-06: 12.5%

Recommended Actions:  The Chair has a plan to address the situation primarily on two fronts:  1. Hire more full-time faculty to cover more sections and reduce the need for part-time faculty to teach more than two courses a semester.  2. Continue to expand available part-time instructional pool where possible.

Expected Outcome:  The SCS Division will limit the number of scheduled classes that are cancelled

Outcome Assessment Method:  The Chair will monitor and record the number of classes that are cancelled in the SCS schedule at the beginning of each semester.

Performance Targets:

Primary Target:  Less than 5% of scheduled classes will be cancelled during AY 05-06.

Secondary Target:

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results):

In fall 2005, 16 sections of 281 offered were cancelled – 5.6%

In spring 2006, 25 sections of 312 offered were cancelled – 8%

Average for AY 2005-06 – 6.9%

Recommended Actions:  The opening of Marietta and the new campus at Cartersville, along with the changed status of Acworth, has made the scheduling process more problematic.  While enrollment was up in the spring from the previous year, it did not exceed fall enrollments as had been the case in years past.  The chair has evaluated the numbers from AY 05-06 and will monitor the numbers in AY 06-07 in attempting to create future schedules that will reduce the number of cancelled sections.
