Unit/Team Goal: The Division of Health Sciences supports Georgia Highlands College in its goal to provide career programs that complement community needs. Each individual curriculum is designed to prepare graduates that are competent entry-level practitioners and eligible for licensure and advanced education. Our programs are structured to support the development of essential qualities of accountability, critical thinking and effective interpersonal communication skills.

 

 

 

 

Expected Outcome:

Every health science student will participate in voluntary health related community activities.

 

 

Outcome Assessment:

Nursing: All students will submit a portfolio which contains records of student participation in voluntary community hours.

Dental Hygiene: All students will submit a form for faculty approval and documentation of all community presentations.

 

 

 

Performance Targets: 

 

Nursing: 100% of the students will demonstrate evidence of participating in 8 hours per year (total 16 hours for generic students and 8 hours for LPNs and Paramedics) of voluntary community health related activities.

Dental Hygiene: 100% of the students will participate in table clinics and community presentations.

 

 

 

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results):

 

Nursing: 97% of the students completing the nursing program demonstrated evidence of completing the voluntary community health related activities.

Dental Hygiene: 100% of the student participated in table clinics and community presentations.

Recommended Actions:

Nursing: An alternate method for tracking volunteer hours has been identified. Additional methods for identifying volunteer hours are being explored.

Unit/Team Goal: The Division of Health Sciences supports Georgia Highlands College in its goal to provide career programs that complement community needs. Each individual curriculum is designed to prepare graduates that are competent entry-level practitioners and eligible for licensure and advanced education. Our programs are structured to support the development of essential qualities of accountability, critical thinking and effective interpersonal communication skills.

Expected Outcome:

Retention of students in the first semester of the nursing program will exceed the overall retention rate for the last three years (66%).

 

Outcome Assessment:

Collect and compare data on retention of student in the first semester of nursing.

 

Performance Targets: 

Primary Target:

75% of the generic students will pass the first semester of nursing.

 

Secondary Target:

75% of LPN and Paramedic Bridge students will pass the first semester in nursing

 

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results):

81.9% of generic students (86/105) completed successfully completed the first semester of nursing.

 

68.4 % of LPN  bridge students (13/19) and 75% (6/8) of Paramedic bridge students completed the first semester in nursing

 

 

Recommended Actions:

The Student Success Project focused on retention is now in its second year and retention rates are rising. The Project will continue with subsequent classes and collect and aggregate data.

Expected Outcome:

FT and PT faculty will receive a satisfactory rating on their annual faculty evaluation, with little discernable difference between the two groups.

 

Outcome Assessment:

Nursing: A “Student Evaluation of Clinical Experience” survey will be completed by all students for both FT and PT clinical instructors.

Dental Hygiene: A “Clinical Instructor Evaluation” survey will be completed by all students for both FT and PT clinical instructors.

Performance Targets: 

Primary Target: Nursing: Student evaluations of FT and PT faculty will have mean score of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale on the “Student Evaluation of Clinical Experience”.

Dental Hygiene: Student evaluations of FT and PT faculty will have a mean score of 3.00 on a 5.00 scale on the “Clinical Instructor Evaluation”.

 

Secondary Target:

Nursing: The annual faculty evaluation for FT and PT faculty will include a satisfactory or outstanding rating on 80% of the criteria.

 

 

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results):

Primary Target: Nursing: Student evaluations of four PT faculty in Fall 2005 had a mean score of 3.23 or higher on the 35 questions pertaining to faculty instruction. All student evaluations of eleven FT faculty had a mean score of 3.15 or higher on these same 35 questions pertaining to faculty instruction.

Dental Hygiene: Student evaluations of all FT and PT faculty had a mean score of 3.00 or higher.

Secondary Target: Nursing: The annual evaluations of all FT and PT faculty included a satisfactory or outstanding rating on 83% of the criteria.
